Frances Oldham Kelsey

Frances Oldham Kelsey

Introduction:

This is an interesting story of how one scientist avoided a national health disaster and the name of the scientist is Frances Oldham Kelsey.

Kelsey's teenage:

While she was 15 years old, she graduated from her high school. She officially registered at McGill University in Montreal and deserved both UG and master's degrees in pharmacology.

Kelsey as faculty:

After acquiring master's degrees she applied for a research post at the university of Chicago's pharmacology department. Her acceptance letter was addressed to her husband. Her career might have ended there but fortunately, it didn't. She earned her doctorate in pharmacology and accepted Chicago's invitation to stay as faculty.

Food & Drug Administration's zero fresher:

As a faculty she undertook pioneering research on drugs and fetal safety. In 1950, she earned an MD, fourth and final degree. By the time she joined the FDA (Food & Drug Administration), with no experience but she was one of the most educated scientists around. Yet as the newest member of the team, she proved herself as the best.

Thalidomide:
US drug company Merrell sent an application to sell a drug called thalidomide. It was a sedative developed in Germany that was already being widely used in dozens of countries to heal insomnia and workplace stress. Thalidomide's anti-nausea properties also made it a popular medicine for pregnant women with morning sickness.

Kelsey's rejection:

After reviewing Merrell's application, Kelsey found its data on thalidomide's absorption, toxicity and low quality. Today, the FDA classifies drugs based on their safety for a fetus. But in 1960, many experts believed that the placental barrier protected a fetus from harm. Kelsey's earlier animal-based research proved the opposite i.e. drugs could pass from mother to fetus through the placenta. Like other drug companies at this time, Merrell had not tested its drug on pregnant animals. So Kelsey rejected Merrell's application and asked them to submit a second supported by better evidence. Her FDA colleagues supported this decision.

Big disappointment:

Merrel had expected a quick, positive reply so it could launch thalidomide for the holiday season, when there is a down in sedative sales. Instead of supplying Kelsey with the data she requested they first tried to convince her to approve the drug over a series of calls and visits. When these failed to shake her, Merrel executives complained that stubborn and fussy Kelsey was the problem, not thalidomide. The FDA supported Kelsey, forcing Merrel to file another application, another and another.

Harmful Side effects of thalidomide:

As Kelsey reviewed and rejected each new application, news of thalidomide's harmful side effects began to surface. In early 1961, Doctors reported cases of nerve damage and by fall, they'd unmasked a more horrible truth. It, widely used by pregnant women, caused severe birth defects. Thousands of babies died in utero, more were born with extra appendages, shorter limbs or no limbs at all.

Media senstation:

In November 1961, thalidomide was pulled from the German market. But Merrell continued trying to get it approved in the US for several months before withdrawing their sixth and final application. Kelsey sounded the alarm that kept it off the multi-billion dollar American drug market. As public awareness of the thalidomide tragedy grew, the quiet scientist became a media sensation. Headlines in newspapers and magazines heralded her heroism while a smiling president John F. Kennedy presented her an award on the white house lawn.

Inspiration:

After that she headed the agency's drug investigation branch. Her visibility may have dimmed since, but her legacy endures. She made evidence based medicine the foundation of reforms that continue to protect people today. I'm inspired by Frances Kelsey's story and I hope you are too.

Smart kiddo

Smart kiddo

Introduction:

In the year 2001, my family entered Coimbatore. I have two siblings a big sister and a small brother. The smart kiddo in this story  is none other than myself...hihih

House owner granny:

Our house owner granny used to scold me a lot so one day I hit her with a iodex bottle on her head. I escaped from her at that time since I was a kid.
Missing those days😢

Smart kiddo:

My mom and dad used to ask me more questions like  "what is your name?", "what is your age?", "which class are you studying?" and "what is your address" as a smart kiddo I used to answer all those questions very well.

Shopping with house owner:

One day, my house Owner wished to go for shopping with a smart kid so she requested my mom to send me. After shopping we were returning home, she walked very slowly but I can't walk slow so I walked little faster.

Wrong path:

After moving some distance I turned back but I can't see my house owner. I started walking in a wrong path. I still remember that day I reached a railway track and started crossing that track again and again.

Tensed family:

My dad started scolding my mom. Granny started praying in church. Everyone started searching for me but unfortunately they can't.

Twist in the story:

While crossing that track I saw two men on a bike they took me to their tailor shop and questioned that "Do you know your address?" I just replied them my home address they brought me to my home. Finally problem solved and my house Owner escaped.

Lost bat

Lost bat

Introduction:

Our family had just vaccated our house and entered into the new locality. There everything is new for us new buildings, new shops, new pupil and new friends. My dad gifted my brother a MRF bat on his birthday. He felt most happiest while playing with that bat. The untold story of that bat is said below!!

Friends:

We got so much friends over there and we have spent those days happily with them by playing cricket, kabadi, volley ball, etc., Mostly we were circling the streets with our respective cycles.

Day:

One day, it was a good noon my brother came to me with tears. He said that he had lost his bat. I came to the road and started seeing each and every faces. I can't judge how he lost his bat. I just started enquiring him.
Unexpected day🙇

Dad's arrival:

On that day evening, my dad entered home. My  Brother started saying about that incident. He was tensed after knowing that we were in a bad environment. I just convinced my father by saying that "I'll take care about this".

Investigation begins!

I enquired all my friends over there. Sam, a small boy said the truth that "Brother i know who stole your bat" and also he said those three guys name.

Revealing the truth:

I saw those guys riding cycle 100 m away from our home. My brother and myself went there then we asked those boys. They didn't reveal the truth. At that situation, I just slapped him on his left cheek, he said that "we only took your bat for selling in a sports shop". After that I have arrested their cycle and said them that "Bring our bat to get back your cycle", I had sent my brother with that guy.

Happiness:

I stand in that same place for an hour but they didn't returned. After that I saw my dad's Scooty, with him on the backseat my brother was sitting with his bat. I felt very happy at that moment. Then we returned home.

Mass crowd in front of our home:

We heard a huge noise in front of our home. Then only my dad said that "An hour before, I started searching for you people at that time I saw your brother with tears, that guy who was with him made him roam around 2kms, In anger I just slapped him on his right cheek after that he hand over the bat by taking that from his relative's home". We opened the door. Everyone were shouting for our rude behavior but none understood our situation. One uncle stood over there said that "I will kill your children".

Tricky police:

My dad dialed his police friend and conveyed him about this. A jeep arrived over there, policemen adviced those boys parents and also us.  After that they dispersed the crowd. Day well spent😑!
